Home / How to maintain yourself in a relationship and deepen the connection – the complete guide to differentiation in relationships
Have you ever felt like you disappear in the relationship? That the compromises, sacrifices, and desire to adapt yourself to the other person have left you feeling empty? – This is common in intimate relationships, but it doesn’t have to continue. In fact, it is possible to be in a deep relationship without giving up who you really are. How? – That’s what this blog post is about.
Differentiation in a relationship is your ability to maintain yourself and your individuality, while maintaining a deep and meaningful connection with your partner.
Differentiation helps create a perfect balance between intimate connection and maintaining healthy personal boundaries. A relationship without differentiation can become dependent, suffocating, and sometimes lead to emotional distance. In contrast, a relationship with differentiation allows both parties to bring their best selves, grow together, and feel free to be themselves in a loving and respectful relationship.
Tamar and Yoav (fictitious names) came to me after five years of marriage. Tamar felt she was losing herself in the relationship, and Yoav felt distant and unable to understand what went wrong. During the treatment, we conducted a constellation exercise that revealed the family patterns that affected their relationship. Tamar realized that she was living under patterns of self-sacrifice, while Yoav identified the family pressures to succeed that affect his expectations within the relationship. They both managed to identify the patterns and understand how they affect their marital dynamics.
They learned to change the focus and build a relationship that allows both of them to be themselves, without giving up closeness and intimacy.
Maintaining differentiation in a relationship requires continuous work, awareness, and the ability to release old patterns that are holding us back. With constellation tools, it is possible to strengthen personal identity within the relationship and ensure that the relationship allows both parties to grow together without giving up independence and personal freedom. This process strengthens self-understanding and allows both partners to remain true to themselves, while creating a dynamic of mutual support and cooperation.
This exercise will help you identify your boundaries and needs within the marital relationship.
Each partner draws three circles:
The first circle represents the marital relationship,
The second circle represents the family
The third circle represents the self.
Within each circle, write what’s important to you in each of these areas.
Then, share your results with each other and discuss ways to maintain balance between the areas.
This exercise will help you better understand how to maintain yourselves and your personal needs within the relationship, without compromising the deep connection.
Differentiation in a relationship is the key to maintaining yourself within a loving, deep, and fulfilling relationship. With the right tools, you can maintain your self and build a relationship based on closeness, respect, and mutual understanding.
