Home / Orders of love: Sometimes it’s not a lack of love – it’s a lack of order
There are couples I meet in the clinic who come with a lot of love and effort.
Two good, sensitive people, committed to the relationship, and yet exhausted. They talk, work on themselves, try again and again to fix things – and yet something gets stuck.
And at this point, it becomes clear: the difficulty does not stem from a lack of love or desire. Love exists.
What is faltering is the internal order of the couple and family system, reminding clients that addressing these patterns can restore harmony and hope.
In family constellation we call it orders of love – simple systemic principles that reorganize the relationships between parents and children, between spouses, and between generations.
When the order stabilizes, the tension decreases, the body relaxes, and the connection returns to flow, offering a sense of relief and renewed connection.
Time after time, I meet people who feel stuck: in connection, in their body, in their emotions, often unaware that these patterns may stem from intergenerational trauma.
Something in them tries again and again to fix things – and life seems to recreate itself.
But then, when we listen inward – through practices like body awareness, guided imagery, or somatic therapy – something else is revealed:
Pain that is not personal can be recognized, and acknowledgment can open a path toward healing, inspiring hope in the audience.
Author and therapist Mark Wolynn, a leader in intergenerational trauma, calls it ‘unspoken family memory,’ emphasizing how understanding these stories can foster connection and validation. In the field of intergenerational trauma, the author of the book It Didn’t Start with Youth Youauthor of the book It Didn’t Start with You, calls it “unspoken family memory”.
This is not a metaphor. It is knowledge encoded in tissues, in the nervous system, in unspoken words.
Sometimes it’s a grandmother who lost a child, and the granddaughter carries within her a deep sadness that has no name.
Sometimes it’s a father who lives with unspoken shame, and his son is ashamed without knowing why.
The story may not have been told – but the body remembers.
The eyes recognize pain that is not their own.
The relationship responds to a dynamic that was not born in it.
This is intergenerational transfer – not through genes, but through belonging.
When the emotional response does not match the situation.
When you feel like you are fighting something ancient, bigger than you.
When there is a pattern that repeats itself over and over without explanation: abandonment, betrayal, unexplained fear.
Wolynn offers an emotional mapping called core language – a way to translate physical sensations, automatic sentences, and recurring images into a deeper family story.
This is not a psychological excavation – it is a systemic listening to what is passed down from generation to generation, until someone is willing to stop and look.
What is common to many of the stories I accompany is the moment when something calms down –
not because they understood, but because they recognized.
Someone said, “I see you.”
Someone understood: “This is not mine.”
And something inside no longer needs to fight.
“Unresolved trauma seeks someone to carry it,
until someone is willing to return it to its source. With love.”
(Mark Wolynn)
The constellation does not erase the past. It returns it to its place.
We all belong.
But we were not meant to identify with the pain of those who came before us, which can often manifest as unresolved issues in our current relationships, making this distinction crucial for healing and connection.
We were not meant to pay an emotional debt.
We were not meant to cancel our lives in the name of a story that is not ours.
This distinction – between belonging and identification – is the moment when relief and hope can emerge, offering comfort and clarity.
We say thank you to the past.
And let it rest.
And from there, turn to life.
The constellation is not only about relieving pain but also about restoring movement.
And movement is possible when there is order, giving you a sense of stability and control in your relationships.
Principle of priority: whoever came first – also preceded in their place.
The grandparents before the parents, the parents before the children.
The ex-spouse before the new partner.
The principle of hierarchy: What is big – gives. What is small – receives.
The parents are the big ones. The children are the recipients.
When these principles are confused, something in love shrinks.
It starts to flow in the opposite direction: from small to large. From the child to the parent. From the partner to the mother’s place.
And when we restore order, the connection breathes.
The body relaxes.
No need to fight for a place.
In the work of differentiation, we ask not only “who does this belong to?” but also:
“What happens between us when I act out of identification?”
Distinction is the ability to feel – without being dragged.
To express – without projecting.
To stay in touch – without being swallowed by it.
And when that happens, there is a possibility for true intimacy.
One that recognizes the pain, without turning it into the basis of the relationship.
One that allows closeness – without losing the self.
This is not separation. This is love with boundaries.
Like it was supposed to be – when we were still children.
Many times, a couple reaches the end of the relationship –
not because they are not suitable,
but because each of them holds an unconscious role for someone else from the family of origin.
One is fighting his mother.
One bends over in front of her shame.
They are in love – but cannot see each other through the screen of transference.
But when distinction appears, so does the possibility to choose.
The connection turns from effort to encounter.
If something in you feels too heavy, too deep, not understood –
It may be that it really didn’t start with you.
And maybe it’s time to stop holding it alone.
Not just therapy – a whole way of life with belonging, differentiation, and partnership that can help you feel hopeful and reassured.
Every day I meet women, men, and couples whose lives have not given them a clear anchor –
But they are looking to create it themselves.
Within a therapeutic journey that is also personal, also couple, and also intergenerational –
We work together through a personal, couple, and intergenerational therapeutic journey to restore stability to the system.
Stop fighting – and start moving.
If something in this text resonated with you – it’s not accidental. It could be a gentle nudge toward reconnecting and feeling hopeful about your path.
It may be your time to restore internal order – bringing balance to yourself, your connections, and your life, empowering you to feel confident and motivated to move forward.
Love flows when we don’t fight for it.
It simply returns to its original place.
