How to build a sense of self-worth after leaving a toxic relationship?

Many women leave toxic relationships but still feel as if their past experiences linger inside them, affecting their daily lives.
He is no longer there, but something of him still gets up with them in the morning: a critical voice, fear of feeling, a constant need to apologize.

And then a painful question arises: “Maybe he was right about me?”

And if you recognize yourself in these feelings, remember that it’s not you, your true self, or your core that is at fault.
This is what happens when you live in a space where you are not seen, not believed, and repeatedly required to justify your very existence.

You weren’t born like this.
It was a way to survive – and now it’s time to learn a new, stable, and safe way. Recognize this doubt as a common part of healing, helping women feel understood and less alone in their struggles. That brings you back to yourself.

Why does a toxic relationship hurt the sense of worth so deeply?

Sometimes the toxic relationship didn’t create the wound – it just sharpened an old one.
A wound from a childhood where there was no one to lean on, where you learned to be “the good girl”, to manage on your own, and to swallow pain without disturbing.

This relationship recreated that feeling: “If I’m not perfect, I have no place.”

And when that happens, you start to blur the line between yourself and the other.
You absorb his feelings, excuse his silences, cushion his anger – and forget yourself.

This is not a weakness. It’s a deep adaptive response.
And when you live in this mechanism long enough, it continues to operate even after the relationship ends, making you feel seen and understood in your ongoing struggles.

  • You hear an internal voice that says, “Keep it to yourself,” which often stems from the guilt and self-blame learned in toxic relationships, deepening your emotional struggles. This understanding can help you feel compassion for your past struggles. Recognizing this can help you feel understood and less alone in your pain.

  • You feel guilty for no reason.

  • You give up – to avoid feeling rejected again

But it’s not you – it’s a relationship that taught you that.

How do we restore a sense of worth?

Step one: identify the dynamics and separate

The first step is to stop identifying with what happened to you.
Many women feel that they are “the problem” when they are actually responding to a toxic reality.

Ask yourself:

  • Were you asked to give up on yourself again and again?

  • Were you punished when you expressed emotion?

  • Did you give – and receive silence?

When you see it, the distinction begins:
It’s not me. It’s a response to what happened to me.

Step two: return to emotional leadership

After a toxic relationship, the feeling is that “I lost myself.”
But you didn’t really lose yourself – you disconnected from the voice that led you from within, which is essential for feeling empowered and in control.

To reconnect, try asking yourself: What am I feeling now (without judging)? What small step can I take today to honor my feelings and needs?

  • What am I feeling now (without judging)? Recognizing your feelings can help you feel safe and accepted in your experience.

  • What is right for me – even if someone is disappointed or I fear judgment? Remember, honoring your needs is essential for healing and growth.

  • Where am I disappearing – and where do I want to be present?

Your distinctiveness begins when you allow yourself to be heard, even if it is unpleasant for others.

Step three: build internal value anchors

Self-worth is not built from thoughts – it is built from small actions with great presence, helping you feel capable and hopeful.
I recommend starting with a simple daily habit: write down three moments each evening when you choose yourself.

It could be:

  • I said no

  • I took a deep breath instead of apologizing.

  • I made myself a meal, not just because I “should.”

An internal anchor is not something someone gives you – it’s something you build from within.

F.A.Q after a toxic relationship – and answers that will remind you who you are

“Maybe I really was the problem in the relationship?”
No. We all enter a relationship with wounds, but a healthy relationship does not exploit these wounds to control you.

“Why do I still feel so worthless?”
Because your feelings were not validated, you may feel unseen and misunderstood. Recognizing this is a vital step toward healing and feeling truly supported.
Healing does not begin with being “okay” – but with agreeing to feel even when it’s hard.

When your inner voice becomes more important than external approvals, it helps you feel empowered, confident, and in control of your worth.
When your inner voice becomes more important than external approvals.
When the boundary becomes natural, it’s recognized that these feelings stem from a lack of validation. Acknowledging and validating your emotions, even when it’s hard,  is a key step in healing, helping you move past struggle.

In conclusion:

You don’t need to justify your worth – remember it.

If you lived without a supportive family backing, it’s not surprising that you sought an anchor even when it hurt.
But the time has come to build a new anchor: within yourself.

I am here to accompany you in just that –
not to “fix” you, but to return you to yourself, to the woman you are without trying to be different.

Your worth does not depend on anyone.
Healing is about reconnecting with your true self and recognizing your inherent worth, regardless of past experiences. Remember, your worth does not depend on anyone else, and you are deserving of love and respect.
