Home / Why are you running from the love you most desire?
You’re not broken. You’re simply weary of closeness that burned you.
If you feel that just when things get good, something inside you shrinks, when something intimate happens you’re not calm, when someone truly sees you, you find a reason to pull away…
It could be that you’re not running from love, but running from the pain it surfaces. That old pain, from those times when closeness wasn’t safe. From the places where closeness turned into confusion, silence, disappearance, or guilt.
Where you needed to find a hug, you received silence. Where you asked to be seen, you were taught not to ask for anything. You learned to survive closeness and not enjoy it. You learned to hold everything alone and not lean on anyone. You learned to flee quietly instead of staying aloud.
It’s not something in you that needs fixing. It’s something that demands respect. It’s a mechanism of deep protection, activated at a time when you had no other choice.
Your nervous system isn’t mistaken, it’s responding. The flight mechanism is the body’s way of saying: “Something here is too familiar to me, and I remember that it hurt once.”
It doesn’t happen in the head, but rather occurs in the somatic response. The body reacts – with silence, with shortness of breath, with the inability to answer a message, with that small disappearance, when someone truly approaches you.
Your reaction doesn’t mean you’re not built for connection. It means: It hurt me when I got close.
Therefore, every time the heart opens, the body shrinks. Not because it doesn’t want to – but because it’s cautious. It holds within it an ancient memory, sometimes unconscious, of what happened when you gave trust.
And here begins the healing: not when you stop being afraid, but when you begin to dwell within the fear, without fleeing from it again.
For women who live without a family support system, the relationship isn’t just an emotional connection. It becomes the only place where it’s possible to feel. The only address for holding, for sharing, for intimacy. There’s no mother’s couch. There’s no sister to calm you. There’s no family to embrace the break.
In such a situation, every emotional movement in the relationship becomes dramatic. Every crack feels like an earthquake.
You want to stay, but the body asks to flee. Because if it hurts, you have nowhere to return. And if you break, there’s no one to pick you up.
Here enters emotional differentiation: not only emotional resilience, but also the ability to feel intensely without being swallowed by it. The ability to stay in connection even when there’s an internal storm.
Flight doesn’t always look like disappearance. Sometimes it looks like intense approach. Initiative, need to explain, search for a solution – just so as not to feel that feeling of abandonment again.
This is a desperate attempt to hold onto the connection. This is early learning: love is something to be chased after. To earn. To prove. It doesn’t come just like that. Deep inside you’re tired. Your heart asks for something else. A connection where you don’t have to chase after love. A connection where you’re allowed to simply be.
Sometimes, the pattern you live in didn’t start with you.
Maybe you carry within you a lineage of women who fled because they had no choice. Who had no language to feel. Who had no place for pain. Who had no safe haven to return to.
Women who survived, at the cost of disconnection. Women who gave up on themselves to survive within a connection or to distance themselves from it. Women who were silent – and you, without knowing, continue that silence.
When you identify this, you stop thinking you’re broken. You start seeing yourself within a continuum. And then you can start choosing. Not out of struggle, but out of compassion.
The next time you feel yourself pulling away, precisely when you most want closeness:
Stop for a moment. Place a hand on your heart or on your stomach. Close your eyes. Ask gently: What am I trying not to feel right now?
There’s no need to fix, understand, or explain. Just dwell with what is. Let your body tell the story without you fleeing from it again.
In that dwelling begins the possibility of staying.
If you see yourself among these words – that’s a start.
No matter what you’ve learned about closeness, and no matter how many times you’ve been frightened – you can learn to stay!
Your differentiation will occur not through force but through gentleness. Through a clear vision of what belongs to the pattern and what belongs to you. What you really want – versus what you’ve ingrained within you in childhood.
It’s possible to learn to rest in closeness. It’s possible to build within you an emotional anchor. It’s possible to build a home – even if you never had one.
It won’t happen all at once, and it won’t happen because you’re pressuring yourself.
It will happen because you stop running.
