The Gottman Method

The Gottman Method

Love is not just an emotion - it's a skill.

Do you know what’s truly important to your partner? Do you feel safe talking about what hurts? Does your communication blur or enhance intimacy? Do you think you have an “emotional infrastructure” that sustains the relationship?

What is couples therapy using the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method (The Gottman Method) was developed by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, a couple of American researchers and psychologists, based on in-depth, long-term research involving thousands of couples. The method is based on in-depth studies conducted at the “Love Lab” in Seattle, where communication patterns, conflict, and couples’ emotional coping were analyzed over the years. It offers a practical, precise therapeutic model and provides tools for fostering close communication, building secure intimacy, and managing conflicts in ways that strengthen the relationship.

What does couples therapy using the Gottman approach look like?

The work includes a combination of in-depth assessment, mapping strengths and challenges, and guidance in three main areas:

  1. Strengthening friendship and emotional intimacy: Creating a couple’s language based on deep acquaintance, affection, and mutual appreciation.
  2. Tools for effective communication and conflict management: Providing a precise language for emotions, needs, and boundaries—even in turbulent moments.
  3. Building shared goals, values, and a couple’s vision: Creating a foundation for a shared future based on renewed choice and mutual understanding.

The Gottman Method is based on a simple principle: couples don’t have to agree on everything—they need to know how to manage their differences without destroying closeness.

The three foundations of the Gottman Method in my clinic:

  1. Up-to-date Love Map: Deep emotional acquaintance based on daily, gentle, and connecting questions.
  2. Conflict management techniques: Identifying the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”—criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling—and learning practical ways to replace them with emotional dialogue.
  3. Rebuilding trust: Strengthening mutual choice, daily appreciation, and couple anchors that create long-term security.

Who is the method suitable for?

  • For couples who struggle to manage communication without being drawn into conflicts.
  • For those who feel the relationship is drifting apart despite the love.
  • For couples who want to work with a structured, clear, and research-based method.
  • For those who want to create real closeness—not just solve problems.

When should you seek couples therapy using the Gottman Method?

  • When there is a feeling of emotional distance or burnout in communication.
  • When conversations end in arguments or disconnection.
  • When one of you feels unheard, misunderstood, or unimportant.
  • When there are difficulties in restoring closeness, intimacy, or touch.
  • When conflicts remain open and unresolved in depth.

How will you know the process is working?

  • Your conversations are less fiery—and more connecting.
  • There is more feeling of visibility, containment, and mutual listening.
  • A new couple’s language is created that allows them to return to each other’s hearts.
  • There is more lightness, softness, and a real choice to stay in the relationship.
